Pol Sambal

Pol Sambola (coconut sambol) is a traditional Sri Lankan dish made from coconut. In Sri Lanka we eat a spicy coconut sambol made with fresh grated coconut, chili and onions.

Wambatu Salada(Fried Brinjal Salad)

This is a easy salad which is ideal for dinner with rice and curry. Salting the eggplant before cooking helps cut down on the amount of oil that gets soaked up.

Lunu Miris (Onion & Chilli Sambal)

This is a mix of onion & chillies pounded with salt..to complete the preparation lime juice is added. A very quick & easy dish. This is not a main dish. Lunu miris is used as an accompaniment for food like hoppers & milk rice.

Katta Sambal (Mix of Chilli & Maldive Fish)

Katta Sambol is a hot dry chilli sambal which a great favourite among Sri Lankans. It is used as an accompaniment for food like hoppers & milk rice.

Bibikkan/ Pol Cake

Locally, the cake is referred to bibikkan, poranu appa or pol cake and is especially popular during the Christmas and New Year holidays. An unassuming brown cake, bibikkan is a tropical version of the familiar fruit cake.

Carrot Cake

Carrot cake is a cake or pie which contains carrots mixed into the batter. The carrot softens in the cooking process, and the cake usually has a soft, dense texture. The carrots themselves enhance the flavor, texture, and appearance of the cake.

Watalappan ( Sri Lankan Coconut & Jaggery Custard)

Watalappan/Watalappam is a coconut and jaggery custard made with coconut milk , jaggery , eggs and spices. This dessert is very popular dish in Sri Lanka ; especially during Eid festival (religious festival celebrated by Muslims). Watalappan is made in large quantities during Eid festival and shared with family and friends to celebrate.

Tempered Potatoes(Ala Themparaduwa)

This  potato dish is made very often in Sri Lankan households and it’s one of my favourites. The authentic  Sri Lankan tempered potatoes are not deep fried, but tempered with a little oil. Deep frying the potatoes adds more flavour to the dish. If you prefer the authentic way you can skip the deep frying.

Homemade Marshmallows

Homemade Marshmallows have this wonderfully sweet vanilla scented airiness that makes them perfect for eating on their own. Marshmallows use simple ingredients and are easier to make than you might think.
