Sri Lankan Dried Sprats Stir Fry (Haal Masso Thel Dhala) -

A true taste from one of the fruits of the ocean & a signature Sri Lankan delicacy. Its unique taste is second to none in any form of Sprats dishes anywhere in the world. You can also replace Sprats with dried anchovies or dried Shrimps.

Ingredients:

  • 100 Grams Dried Sprats
  • 1 Large Red Onion (cut into slices)
  • 2 Medium Potato (cut into thin wedges)
  • 2 Clove Garlic (chopped)
  • 1 Medium Tomato (chopped)
  • 1 Tablespoon Chili Flakes
  • 1 Teaspoon Turmeric
  • 3 Tablespoon Oil
  • 6 Medium Curry Leaves
  • 1 Small Cinamon Stick
  • 3 Small Cardamom
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Salt (to taste)

 

Method:

  • Prepare Dried Sprats by removing the head part of the fish (including the belly area) & wash thoroughly with medium hot water to reduce excess salt (make sure to drain water).
  • Heat up oil in a medium sized pan for about 2 minutes, when oil is hot enough add Red Onion, Garlic, Curry Leaves, Cinnamon Stick, Cardamom & mix well. Let this fry for about 2 minutes.
  • Then add Dried Sprats & let it fry/cook for about 3 minutes (make sure string during the process). Then add Potatoes & Turmeric and continue cooking for further 10 minutes till potatoes get soft.
  • Add Chili Flakes & Chopped tomatoes and cook further 3 minutes. Then take the pan out of the heat & check slat taste, if necessary add salt to your taste.
  • Serve hot with steamed rice or toasted bread.
